Race To End Waste’, a school-wide interdisciplinary project, strives to educate students, teachers and the community through various conservation initiatives. Complete Building Corporation, a local commercial general contracting company, partnered with College Park Middle School for 2009, to launch their new environmental program that teaches conservation begins in the classroom. The program is a direct result of the company’s employee directed charitable giving. Complete Building Corporation employees will be active participants throughout the project; culminating with the construction of a greenhouse for the students at the conclusion of the project in late April 2009.

Motivated by friendly competition, homerooms will collect recyclable materials throughout the school year and the homeroom collecting the most by the competition’s end will be awarded a field trip on the Spirit of South Carolina . Additionally, the curriculum will incorporate the principles of conservation and sustainability.

Complete Building Corporation's goal is to add an additional school to the program each so that in the next ten years every middle school in Berkeley County will have conservation initiatives as part of thier curriculum, as well as a greenhouse.

College Park Turns Trash into Art
By Brian Lariviere, College Park Middle School Art Teacher

On Saturday, October 18th, Earth Force sponsored a “Trash to Art” competition at the Middleton Plantation Garden Festival. College Park Middle School’s 8th Grade advanced Art students worked for two weeks constructing stunning and earth-friendly creations, including a project named “Water Lilies” made completely out of water bottles. We are proud of all our participants. Special congratulations to the students who developed the three winning projects! Check out the photo gallery to see pictures of the students’ work.

Ingrid Dukes, the principal of College Park Middle School. " It has been so amazing to see how seriously our students have taken the recycling program. It has been equally gratifying to see thier PARENTS get into the spirit of our RACE TO ELIMINATE WASTE!!!!!!!!!!"
